The founding of Hong Kong and Watsons
Brand Museum Docent

On 𝟮𝟲 January 𝟭𝟴𝟰𝟭, the British navy landed here and Hong Kong formally opened as a port. The “Watsons Dispensary” (屈臣氏大藥房) we know today began as the “Hong Kong Dispensary” (香港大藥房), which in fact opened as early as May that year at what is now Possession Point (水坑口) in Sheung Wan, supplying medicines to the British troops who were struggling with Hong Kong’s hot, humid climate.
Few people know that Watsons later established a scholarship: Sun Yat-sen, then studying medicine in Hong Kong, was one of its recipients in 1888 — before he went on to overthrow the Qing government. For details, visit the Watsons Hall — /explore/watsons.
